There’s a new comparison campaign in town. Google’s taking a page out of the Mac playbook with its new #BestPhonesForever campaign. It’s only been 6 days and their 5 videos already have ~40 million views 👀 On the surface, this ad makes the iPhone and Google Pixel seem like best pals. But make no mistake, Google is calling out a key differentiator in each video. Some people may think this campaign gives too much attention to iPhone and further validates them as the category leader. But I don’t see it that way. I think it’s a smart campaign, similar to how the PC vs Mac campaign was effective back in the early 2000s. At the time, Microsoft-powered PCs were the category leader. Positioning against them allowed Mac to highlight how they were "cooler", more innovative, built for a different group of people. The contrast of Microsoft helped make that more clear. This campaign from Pixel has a lot of similarities. It definitely makes the iPhone seem older, slower to innovate, even built for a different generation of people?
