This Nokia ad was brilliant — because it followed the BEST TACTIC for fighting big competitors: It used their strengths AGAINST THEM. Let’s break it down… When you go up against a larger competitor, you can’t play THEIR GAME — they’ll win every time! For example, if Nokia just said “we’re better than Apple or Samsung,” consumers wouldn’t believe it. Why? Because Apple and Samsung spent billions on marketing — often one-upping each other! So instead, Nokia mocked those companies’ efforts — as if to say, “While these two fight EACH OTHER, we focus on YOU.” This tactic can be deployed anywhere. Like… 🎯 “Yes, our competitor is big... which also means they’re slow.” 🎯 “Yes, our competitor is well-financed... so they won’t take your smaller needs seriously.” (Obviously, it’s not a cure-all: One ad doesn’t solve Nokia’s woes. But that doesn’t mean it’s not smart!) Here’s the thing — you can’t ignore reality. But you can ALWAYS shape the story.
